What is a model release?

A model release is a formal contract between photographer and model that allows the photographer to use the images where the model appears.

All microstock agencies offer their own model releases for you to use. All of these contain details particular to that specific agency rendering the model release only suitable for use with them. Most of the model releases are very similar in content and basically say that the Model has given the photographer to use and distribute pictures of them without restriction. The rights to any compensation gained by selling the images are ceded to the photographer.

It is troublesome to have your model fill in multiple forms for multiple microstock agencies. The way to get around this problem is to have a generic model release that is accepted by all agencies. This allows you to streamline your paperwork and make the whole process easier for you and your models.

It is also important to note that while the model allows you unrestricted use of the images, microstock agencies ensure that your models are protected against any use in abusive or degrading material. This information is outlined in the buyers agreement with any particular agency.
