New city – New challenges – New opportunities

Today I find myself in the overpopulated, very polluted and extremely hot city of Jakarta! Everything is new, everything is foreign, everything is exciting. I am here because my girlfriend was offered a contract she could not refuse with an oil and gas firm for 1 year in the Indonesian capital. So I decided that as a freelance photographer back home in South Africa, I could make some sort of living doing that here in Jakarta. I was not prepared for the challenges that lay ahead.

Firstly, I am here only on a tourist visa and I cannot legally work in the country. Secondly, the language barrier poses a problem, a photographer needs to be able to communicate with his/her models. Thirdly, Jakarta is so busy, so disorganized and so ugly, it is not a photogenic place at all! So I decided to look for other income opportunities available to me. Microstock stuck out as the most attractive way to both make money and further my passion for photography.

Microstock offers a photographer a unique way to make money, while you sleep your images are selling, when you are on holiday, your images are selling, when you are working creating more images, the ones you already have online are selling and earning you income. It really is a fascinating world and one that I want to be a part of!
